Cairo: The Saudi National Centre of Meteorology (NCM) is set to organize training courses for workers in Islam’s two holiest mosques to boost their readiness to handle weather situations during the upcoming seasons of the Muslim fasting month of Ramadan and the annual Hajj pilgrimage.

The courses target employees of the General Authority for the Care of the Grand Mosque in Mecca and the Prophet’s Mosque in Medina to help them take precautions against weather phenomena and upgrade effective responses in order to enhance worshippers’ safety and comfort in both mosques frequented by millions of mosques from all over the world.

Titled “Methods of Responding to Weather Phenomena in the Two Holy Mosques and the Centre’s Programmes and Services”, the courses particularly focus on the groups concerned with crisis and risk management, security and safety, awareness media and crowd management.

The training initiative is part of cooperation between NCM and the General Authority for the Care of the Two Holy Mosques to provide high-calibre services for worshippers during Ramadan and Hajj.

The lunar holy month of Ramadan, expected to start this year on March 1, traditionally marks the peak of the Umrah or minor pilgrimage season. Last year, around 1.8 million Muslims attended Hajj in and around Mecca. This year’s Hajj is due in early June, usually marked by intense summer heat.

After performing the Umrah in the Grand Mosque, Islam’s holiest site, many pilgrims would head to Medina to perform prayers in the Prophet’s Mosque and visit other Islamic landmarks in the city.
