The Saudi Ministry of Hajj has introduced new criteria and a certification process for foreign media personnel and journalists who want to cover the 2027 Hajj in Saudi Arabia.
The new guidelines stipulate that foreign Hajj missions must upload their media team’s biodata and details to the Nusuk Portal before their 2027 Hajj visa can be approved.
The new regulations also require media teams from all Hajj-participating countries to work under the umbrella of a Saudi-based media establishment after signing the necessary contractual agreements.
Hajj Reporters learnt that the new framework for media coverage is similar to medical services, which requires Hajj missions to enter into an agreement with Saudi-based establishments.
High-level sources informed Hajj Reporters that the Kingdom intends to reduce the issue of fake news during Hajj and has resolved to ensure that only well-trained and professional media platforms are allowed to cover the 2027 Hajj
The yesteryear process
Prior to the new regulations, media accreditation for Hajj required official permits issued by the Saudi General Authority for Media Regulation (GAMR) via digital platforms like the GAMR or Tawakklana app.
The media permit varies for Local and international media delegations.
The permit for technical equipment is used to obtain clearance for temporary radio/television studios and satellite uplink vehicles, while the filming clearance is a mandatory “no objection certificate” required for shooting in holy sites.
Thereafter, approved journalists receive a digital work card via the Tawakkalna app for movement in holy areas.
However, the news requirements ensure that all those who are to participate in the media are professional journalists with the required experience to cover the Hajj exercise.
