Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto has called for comprehensive reforms to the management of Hajj and Umrah, ranging from financial management to efforts to eradicate practices that harm pilgrims. Minister of Hajj and Umrah Mochamad Irfan Yusuf and Vice Minister Dahnil Anzar Simanjuntak, made the statement after meeting Prabowo at the Presidential Palace Complex in Jakarta on Monday, September 28, 2026.
According to Minister Irfan, President Prabowo is paying close attention to efforts to clean up the Hajj and Umrah ecosystem from fraudulent practices that have harmed prospective pilgrims. Prabowo also welcomed the Ministry of Hajj and Umrah’s launch of a hotline to combat mafias.
“He strongly appreciates our efforts to clean up the Hajj and Umrah ecosystem from cartels, violations, and fraudulent practices, all of which ultimately cause losses for prospective pilgrims.
Irfan said Prabowo’s support would strengthen the ministry’s efforts to reform the sector. “Hopefully, with his appreciation, we will be even more motivated to clean up anything related to Hajj and Umrah so that pilgrims are not harmed. As he put it, we should sweep away all the cartels and mafias involved in Hajj and Umrah,” he added.
In addition, Prabowo also placed particular emphasis on Hajj financial management. Vice Minister Dahnil said the President had called for a forensic audit of Hajj financial management to obtain a factual picture of its current condition.
“The President called for a forensic audit of Hajj financial management to be carried out as soon as possible,” Dahnil said.
Dahnil further said the audit is important as part of efforts to restructure Hajj financial management for the benefit of future pilgrims. Through a forensic audit, the government wants to establish the actual condition of Hajj financial management so that reforms can be carried out accurately and comprehensively.
“The President wants to know what the actual facts are and what the true condition of Hajj finances is,” Dahnil said.
Dahnil added that follow-up measures would be coordinated with relevant parties, including the Financial and Development Supervisory Agency (BPKP). The Secretariat said the government is targeting a cleaner and more accountable Hajj and Umrah management system that protects pilgrims’ interests from registration through departure.
