The National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON) is set to embark on comprehensive reforms after the 2026 Hajj to reposition Nigeria’s Hajj industry for improved performance and global competitiveness.

The development was disclosed by an aide to the commission’s Chairman, Ambassador Ismail Abba Yusuf, who spoke on the planned reforms following calls for early registration and structural changes in the sector.

According to the aide, the Chairman has outlined that some impactful reforms will be implemented immediately after the 2026 Hajj exercise to avoid disruption to current operations.

These suggestions are part of the measures we intend to implement immediately after the 2026 Hajj to avoid distraction or confusion. Subsequent Hajj registrations will be done earlier after resolving policy issues in Nigeria and Saudi Arabia,” he said.

He outlined seven key priority areas for reform, including improvement in the quality of services to pilgrims, covering accommodation, feeding, transportation and medical care in Makkah, Medina and other holy sites.

The commission also plans to address the overlap of functions among NAHCON, state pilgrims welfare boards and private tour operators, which has been identified as a major cause of logistical inefficiencies, particularly in airlift operations and pilgrims’ welfare.

Other focus areas include strengthening stakeholder engagement, continuous pilgrims’ education and expansion of information and communication technology infrastructure to improve data management, documentation, visa processing and Hajj flight coordination.

NAHCON is also working with the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) to develop a unified strategy for the efficient and timely administration of Basic Travel Allowance for pilgrims.

In addition, the commission plans to enforce strict compliance with regulations and contractual obligations by service providers.

The aide said the reforms are aimed at improving efficiency, transparency and service delivery in Nigeria’s Hajj operations.
