"Jaset" reveals that efforts are underway to assist over 200 Thai pilgrims stranded after Saudi Arabian airports closed their airspace

The Ministry of Interior is urgently assisting 200 Thai pilgrims stranded following the attack on the Saudi airport. Airlines have already dispatched a special plane to bring them back, and a coordination center has been established in Hat Yai to closely monitor those affected. Pilgrims are advised to follow news updates and adjust their travel plans accordingly. Today (October 14), Mr. Jetset Thaiseth, Deputy Minister of Interior, revealed the situation regarding the attack on the Saudi Arabian airport, which affected approximately 200 Thai pilgrims intending to perform Umrah. They were unable to travel as scheduled due to the airport’s inability to provide services and the closure of airspace.

However, coordination and support have been provided to the affected airlines. Last night, Saudi Arabian Airlines sent an empty plane to pick up the passengers, primarily the first 200 people.

A coordination center has been established at Hat Yai Airport to inquire about the situation, provide information, and clarify details to the passengers. To prevent misunderstandings or discrepancies regarding travel and services at Suvarnabhumi Airport, initial inquiries with various airlines indicate that some have changed their destination airports to Medina and Jeddah. Airlines that have cancelled flights will be responsible for all related airfare costs.

Mr. Jetset acknowledged that the airport is currently not ready for service and the airspace is closed. However, once the airport reopens, if pilgrims intend to travel to Mecca anyway, landing in Medina or Jeddah will not cause significant inconvenience. Nevertheless, it is the responsibility of the tour operators to negotiate with hotels in Saudi Arabia to protect the rights of travelers.

The government is mindful of those who intend to travel for pilgrimage and have already paid for tour groups, as well as independent travelers who have already incurred expenses. These individuals can potentially postpone their travel dates. Therefore,

Mr. Jetset urges pilgrims to closely monitor news and announcements from relevant agencies, including the Department of Provincial Administration, the Department of Tourism, and coordination with agencies in the three southern border provinces to ensure comprehensive assistance and care for those affected.
