Saudi Arabia has executed two Bangladeshi nationals in the Makkah region following their conviction for committing an immoral act inside a mosque, the Ministry of Interior has announced.

The ministry identified the individuals as Nazerul Islam Abdul Basir and Siti Akhtar, who were found guilty by a competent court after security authorities apprehended them and investigations were conducted.

According to the ministry’s statement, the pair were formally charged and prosecuted, with the court sentencing them to death under ta’zir, a form of discretionary punishment under Islamic law.

The judgment was upheld by the relevant authorities, while a royal order was subsequently issued for the execution to be carried out.

The ministry said the executions took place on Wednesday, October 14, 2026, corresponding to 3/5/1448 AH, in the Makkah region.

It added that the punishment reflected the gravity of the offence and the violation of the sanctity of the mosque, particularly given the significance of the holy city.

The Ministry of Interior reiterated the Saudi government’s commitment to maintaining public security, upholding justice and enforcing Islamic law against individuals who violate the sanctity of mosques or engage in similar acts.

It also warned that anyone found committing comparable offences would face legal consequences.
