In a strategic move to enhance the 2025 Hajj experience for Nigerian private pilgrims, the Association of Hajj and Umrah Operators of Nigeria (AHOUN) has announced a partnership with Umza Airline, a local carrier approved by the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON), to handle airlift operations for its members.
The decision was revealed by Alhaji Abdul Lateef Ekundayo, President of AHOUN, who emphasised the association’s commitment to supporting local aviation businesses and ensuring a smoother travel experience for pilgrims.
“AHOUN as a body is engaging a local flight known as Umza Airline. It’s one of the four airlines screened and approved by NAHCON for state pilgrims,” Ekundayo stated.
While many private Hajj operators continue to rely on international airlines such as Emirates, Qatar Airways, and Turkish Airlines, AHOUN’s move to choose a domestic carrier was deliberate and based on both economic and practical considerations.
Ekundayo highlighted the hardship pilgrims often face when using foreign airlines, citing long transits, delayed arrivals, and fatigue among elderly passengers.
“A journey of about 5-6 hours will take almost a whole day with foreign airlines. Our pilgrims transit through Doha or Dubai, wait hours without hotel arrangements, and arrive in Saudi Arabia completely exhausted. This affects the essence of their pilgrimage,” he said.
By engaging Umza Airline, AHOUN aims to not only simplify the journey for pilgrims but also stimulate the local economy by keeping Hajj-related funds within the country.
“We chose Umza Airline to promote the economy of our country,” Ekundayo added, reaffirming AHOUN’s commitment to national development and the well-being of Nigerian pilgrims.
The association also pledged continued collaboration with NAHCON to ensure a successful and hitch-free Hajj operation, stressing that its focus remains on service delivery rather than publicity.
“Even if we make an official statement, it will be after Hajj, by the grace of God,” Ekundayo concluded.
With preparations gaining momentum, AHOUN’s partnership with Umza is expected to offer a more efficient, comfortable, and spiritually rewarding Hajj experience for private pilgrims in 2025.
