A Historic Prophetic Well inside Al-Masjid an-Nabawi

Bi’r Ḥāʾ is a historic Prophetic well that once belonged to the noble Companion Abū Ṭalḥah al-Anṣārī (رضي الله عنه). After the revelation of the Qur’ānic verse:

“You will never attain righteousness until you spend from that which you love.”

(Āl ʿImrān 3:92)

Abū Ṭalḥah (رضي الله عنه) donated this well—his most beloved possession—as ṣadaqah for the sake of Allah. Today, its location lies within Al-Masjid an-Nabawi, preserved as part of the sacred history of Madinah.

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to prefer its water, finding it especially pleasant, and he would drink from it, further elevating its status and blessing.

Location and Significance

📍 Location

Bi’r Ḥāʾ is located inside Al-Masjid an-Nabawi, on the northern side, near King Fahd Gate.

More precisely, it lies behind King Fahd Gate, between the second and third columns, where three circular marble markers on the floor indicate its original position.

📜 Historical Background

The well was situated in the orchard (garden) of Abū Ṭalḥah al-Anṣārī, which was the most cherished of his properties.

Upon hearing the verse encouraging spending from what one loves most, he immediately dedicated the well for Allah’s sake.

It thus became a continuous charity (ṣadaqah jāriyah), benefiting generations after him.

The Prophet ﷺ frequently visited the well and drank from its sweet and refreshing water.

🌿 Spiritual and Historical Importance

Bi’r Ḥāʾ is among the wells directly connected to the Seerah of the Prophet ﷺ.

It witnessed significant moments and reflects the deep sincerity and sacrifice of the Companions.

During the expansions of Al-Masjid an-Nabawi, the well was incorporated within the mosque, ensuring its preservation and honoring the righteous deed of Abū Ṭalḥah (رضي الله عنه).

How to Identify Its Location Today

Enter Al-Masjid an-Nabawi through King Fahd Gate (or nearby gates).

Proceed towards the left side.

Look for distinct marble markings on the floor indicating the well’s site.

Although the area is usually covered by carpet, the marble circles can still be distinguished from the surrounding flooring.

Bi’r Ḥāʾ remains a silent yet powerful reminder of:

Qur’ānic guidance put into action,

the Companions’ love for Allah over worldly possessions,

and the living legacy of the Prophet ﷺ within the Sacred Mosque of Madinah.

May Allah be pleased with Abū Ṭalḥah al-Anṣārī and grant us the ability to spend from what we love most for His sake.
