The National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON) has reaffirmed its commitment to food safety regulations during the 2026 Hajj, disclosing that some dinner meals meant for Nigerian pilgrims on Tuesday night were rejected for failing to meet Saudi health standards.

NAHCON said the Saudi health authorities have continued to enforce strict food safety measures to safeguard pilgrims, particularly due to the prevailing weather conditions during the Hajj period.

According to the commission, some meals served on May 27, 2026, did not satisfy the required handling and packaging procedures and were immediately rejected in collaboration with Saudi authorities.

The commission stated that alternative light refreshments were promptly provided by the service support company to cushion the effect on affected pilgrims.

NAHCON added that its board members had gone round to explain the situation to officials of the affected states.

Meanwhile, the NAHCON Chairman, Ambassador Ismail Abba Yusuf, has directed the Security Committee to investigate the caterers involved and those who facilitated their contracts.

In a related development, Yusuf also ordered the Central Security Committee to investigate tour operators accused of bringing in more pilgrims than the number officially registered.

The commission alleged that some operators were exploiting pilgrims and warned that any operator found guilty after investigations would face sanctions, including withdrawal of operating licences.

NAHCON further disclosed that arrangements had been initiated for refunds to pilgrims affected by the rejected meals.

The commission appreciated the understanding of the pilgrims and reassured them of its continued commitment to their welfare throughout the Hajj exercise.
