King Abdulaziz International Airport in Jeddah has a current capacity to handle around 42-49 million passengers annually, based on its latest operational figures. In 2023, the airport served 42.7 million passengers, and this number increased to 49.1 million in 2024, marking a 14% growth.
However, the airport is undergoing expansion to increase its capacity to accommodate 114 million passengers annually by 2031.
This ambitious project includes:
Expansion of Terminal 1:
increasing its capacity by 15 million passengers annually, with new gates, air bridges, and parking aprons
- Terminal 2 Construction: tripling the airport’s current capacity, with an estimated cost of over $10 billion
- Fourth Runway Construction: to accommodate growing air traffic, scheduled for completion by 2029
- New Logistics Area: covering over 3 square kilometers, with customs and service buildings, and leasable spaces
The airport’s existing infrastructure includes:
- Three parallel runways: designated 16L/34R, 16C/34C, and 16R/34L
- Hajj Terminal: accommodating 80,000 travelers at any given time, designed for pilgrims taking part in the annual Islamic Hajj pilgrimage
- Terminal 1: one of the largest airport terminals in the world, handling most flight operations and serving 19 airlines
