The Hajj Savings Scheme (HSS) is the best model for a successful Hajj exercise.
Prof. Abubakar Yagawal, Commissioner Planning, Research, Statistics, Information and Library Services (PRSILS) in the National Hajj Commission (NAHCON), told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Monday in Sokoto.
NAN reports that the scheme, a collaboration between the NAHCON and non-interest banks, particularly Jaiz Bank, allows intending pilgrims to save over time in a Sharia-compliant manner.
He expressed optimism that the model would prevent late payment of Hajj fares by intending pilgrims, facilitate securing accomodations at better locations in both Mecca and Medina as well as ensure proper plannings.
He lamented that the delay in Hajj payments led to impromptu arrangements, securing accommodations in far places stressing that Saudi Arabia authorities ensure first-come-first-serve arrangements.
” Most Nigerians wait untill closer to the dateline fixed for payment, some rushed to sell their livestock or farm produce and pay money at once, two or three installments.
” The attitude hinders smooth arrangements in Nigeria as Saudi Arabian authorities always communicate to nations on coming year Hajj exercise immediately after completing a year rituals.
” There is need to understand that Hajj is a lifetime religious ritual that need plan for years, ” he said.
Yagawal explained that Hajj saving scheme was a global practice that enable pilgrims welfare agencies to plan ahead of years pilgrimage exercises.
According to him, intending pilgrim can approach a designated financial institution with Hajj saving scheme model programme for deposits which usually being spreads in installments.
” The model ensures reduction of Hajj fares for intending pilgrim because pilgrim’s deposited money at the banks will be on legitimate transactions using the funds, thereby the owner benefit with legal financial proceeds.
“This is a legacy tool that will serve generations to come, especially our youth and low-income earners.,” Yagawal said.
He commended President Bola Tinubu for his commitment towards ensuring a smooth Hajj operations, facilitates hitch free conduct of the exercise with increased successes acknowledging the present reduction of Hajj fares for 2026 pilgrimage.
Yagawal further commended state governors for their respective supports to NAHCON especially the North-West Governors Forum for their readiness to ensure payments.
Yagawal appealed to all stakeholders to strictly comply with the timelines set by the Saudi Arabian authorities for the 2026 Hajj operations.
NAN reports that the HSS is established based on the Mudaraba(partnership) principle, where savings are invested and profits are generated and distributed among the savers, which can help subsidize the Hajj cost.
The scheme is designed for all Muslims regardless of their income, age, or social status.
