ISLAMABAD: Saudi Arabia’s General Presidency for the affairs of the Grand Mosque and the Prophet’s Mosque have completed the maintenance work of the holy Kaaba at the end of the Hajj season this year, the Saudi Press Agency (SPA) said in a statement released on Monday.

The routine maintenance work is part of a directive issued by King Salman and included the “treatment of the edges and stone walls in some areas…using customized materials to ensure the safety of the Kaaba.”

The General Directorate of Projects assigned for the task also fixed the rings which hold the Kaaba cover in place.

More than 2.5 million pilgrims performed Hajj in August this year, according to the Ministry of Hajj and Umrah, which is in the process of issuing 10 million visas for this year’s Umrah season.

Elaborate arrangements are in place to facilitate pilgrims, including a shuttle train service which transported more than 360,000 pilgrims during the Hajj season in Makkah.
