The ongoing military tensions involving United States and Israel against Iran have significantly disrupted Umrah travel plans for Nigerian pilgrims, following widespread airspace closures across parts of the Middle East.
According to a report by Daily Trust, major transit hubs including Doha and Dubai have been affected, forcing several international airlines to suspend or cancel flights.
Airlines impacted include Emirates, Etihad Airways, Qatar Airways, Turkish Airlines, EgyptAir and Ethiopian Airlines. The cancellations have left many prospective pilgrims stranded, with several forced to postpone their Ramadan Umrah plans.
Although Saudi Arabia has kept its airspace open and Saudia Airlines continues operations, uncertainty remains over possible further restrictions amid rising regional tensions.
Nigerian pilgrims and tour operators have expressed frustration over last-minute flight cancellations, visa delays and postponed bookings. The Association for Hajj and Umrah Operators of Nigeria has urged members and intending pilgrims to closely monitor official updates and remain patient.
Meanwhile, religious activities in Mecca and Medina continue normally for pilgrims already in the Kingdom.
Stakeholders say the disruption underscores the vulnerability of international religious travel to geopolitical conflicts, advising pilgrims to rely on verified advisories and consider rescheduling where necessary.
