Outcry as Kaduna Pilgrims Agency Accommodates Male and Female Pilgrims in Same Hotel in Makkah

Controversy has erupted over the Kaduna State Pilgrims Welfare Agency’s decision to lodge both male and female pilgrims in the same hotel in Makkah for the ongoing 2025 Hajj.

Some female pilgrims have expressed outrage over the arrangement, calling it inappropriate and in violation of moral and religious principles, especially in the holy city.

The hotel, located in the Misfalah area along Ibrahim Khalil Road, was reportedly used by Katsina State during the 2024 Hajj, but exclusively for male pilgrims.

A relative of one of the female pilgrims told Hajj Reporters from Nigeria that the decision was “outrageous” and “should be condemned by all and sundry.”

Alhaji Umar, whose sister is among those affected, said she has been deeply uncomfortable since arriving at the hotel. “She is even reluctant to go to Haram because the lifts are always crowded with men,” he said.

Another pilgrim described the situation as “embarrassing,” especially coming from Kaduna, a state once seen as a model in Hajj operations.

“It’s not just about comfort—it’s about religious and moral standards. How can this happen in Makkah of all places during Hajj?” she said.

Saudi authorities had last year introduced regulations prohibiting even married couples from sharing rooms during Hajj, except those above 65. The guidelines require gender separation and designate specific areas for family interaction.

Efforts to get a response from the Kaduna State pilgrims’ agency were unsuccessful as calls to the agency’s public relations officer were unsuccessful.
