Senate Screens New NAHCON Chairman, Prof. Abdullahi Saleh Usman, Awaits confirmation

The Senate Committee on Foreign Affairs convened today, Tuesday, 8th of October, 2024 to screen Professor Abdullahi Saleh Usman for confirmation as Chairman of the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON). The session, held at the National Assembly Complex in Abuja, was chaired by Senator Abubakar Sani Bello, Chairman Senate Committee on Foreign Affairs. Other members were Senator Jafar Shettima Chairman, House Committee on Muslim Pilgrimage and Senator Bashir Lado who is the Special Adviser to the President. In attendance was also Senator Shehu Buba Umar and Senator Muhammad Adamu Aliero. 

During the proceedings, Senator Shettima, in his opening remarks, expressed confidence in the committee’s capacity to thoroughly assess and screen the nominee. Following a review of Prof. Usman’s credentials, the committee acknowledged his extensive expertise in Arabic language and Islamic Studies—key qualifications for the role of NAHCON Chairman.

The motion to confirm Professor Usman’s appointment was initiated by Senator Muhammad Adamu Aliero and seconded by Senator Shehu Buba Umar. The Senate unanimously approved the nomination of Professor Usman as the new NAHCON Chairman.  Formal announcement on the confirmation is expected at plenary after the Committee submits its report. This would be followed by swearing in by the Office of the Vice President.
