The Sutan of Sokoto, His Eminence Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar has performed Umrah in the Holy City of Mecca, where he offered prayers for peace, security and unity in Nigeria.

His Eminence Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, who is also President-General of the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA), undertook the lesser pilgrimage on March 5, 2026, corresponding with the 16th day of Ramadan 1447 AH.

A photograph released by the Sultan’s media team after the spiritual exercise showed him alongside his two sons, Amir and Walid.

During the pilgrimage, the monarch prayed for Nigeria, the Muslim community across the country and the people of Sokoto State, where he occupies the Usmaniyyah throne. He also prayed for wisdom, good health and guidance for the nation’s leaders.

Before departing Medina, Abubakar commended Nigerian Muslims for what he described as their resilience and peaceful disposition despite challenges faced by some members of the community.

He urged Nigerians to avoid actions or narratives that portray Islam and Muslims negatively, noting that such attitudes lack support in the Qur’an, the Hadith and the country’s diverse cultural traditions.

The Sultan also appreciated Islamic leaders and traditional rulers who ensured that religious activities, including the announcement of the Ramadan moon sighting, proceeded smoothly during his absence.

Those he acknowledged included the Shehu of Borno, Abubakar Ibn Umar Garbai El-Kanemi; President of the Muslim Ummah of South West Nigeria, Rasaki Oladejo; and Secretary-General of NSCIA, Is-haq Oloyede.

He also prayed for traditional rulers across the country, including the Ooni of Ife, Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi.

The Sultan reaffirmed his commitment to a peaceful and united Nigeria and urged leaders at all levels of government to guide citizens toward responsible speech and conduct that respect the sensibilities of others.

The statement was signed by the Media Team of the Sultan of Sokoto on March 7, 2026.
