The Ogun State Government has begun moves to commence international passenger operations at Gateway International Airport, with plans to start with Hajj flights to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

The state government said the initiative is part of a broader strategy to strengthen aviation infrastructure and stimulate economic growth in Ogun State and the South-West region.

Officials said the move comes as the state intensifies efforts to fully activate the airport, which is expected to serve as a strategic aviation hub for travellers and businesses within Ogun and neighbouring states.

Governor Dapo Abiodun has initiated discussions with key federal agencies whose roles are critical to the airport’s international operations, including Hajj and cargo flights.

The engagements involve agencies responsible for immigration, security and customs clearance to ensure that the airport meets all regulatory and operational requirements before the commencement of international services.

To coordinate the process, the governor has tasked the aviation consultant and accountable manager of Gateway International Airport, Dapo Olumide, with leading discussions with relevant federal bodies.

Olumide has already held meetings with officials of the Nigeria Immigration Service, the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency and the Nigeria Customs Service as part of the preparations.

The airport is expected to support pilgrimage travel, particularly Hajj operations, improve regional connectivity and facilitate cargo movement to boost trade and investment in Ogun State.

Once operational, Gateway International Airport is projected to complement existing aviation facilities in the South-West, including the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos.
