The Imperative of Early Payment of Hajj Fare, By Shafii Sani Mohammed

by admin

One of the most important decisions an intending pilgrim can make is to pay for Hajj as early as possible. While many pilgrims wait until deadlines approach, early payment offers significant advantages not only to the pilgrim but also to the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON) and the entire Hajj industry.

The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has, in recent years, introduced an earlier and more structured Hajj calendar, requiring participating countries to complete accommodation bookings, transportation contracts, catering arrangements, visa processing and other operational requirements several months before the pilgrimage. The Ministry of Hajj and Umrah has already released the implementation timetable for the 1448AH (2027) Hajj, with preparations beginning shortly after the conclusion of the previous Hajj season and strict deadlines for contracting services. Missing these deadlines could result in the loss of preferred services or even affect a country’s overall Hajj arrangements.

For intending pilgrims, early payment provides peace of mind and adequate time to complete all necessary documentation, including passport processing, medical screening, vaccinations and orientation programmes. It also eliminates the anxiety associated with last-minute fundraising and enables pilgrims to prepare spiritually, mentally and physically for the sacred journey.

From an operational standpoint, early payments enable NAHCON and State Pilgrims’ Welfare Boards, Agencies and Commissions to plan more effectively. Knowing the number of confirmed pilgrims in advance allows the Commission to negotiate better accommodation close to the Holy Mosques, secure quality feeding services, arrange reliable transportation and coordinate flight schedules efficiently. Early financial commitments also strengthen Nigeria’s negotiating position with service providers in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, resulting in better services and value for money.

Early payment also contributes to the overall success of Nigeria’s Hajj operations. It reduces administrative bottlenecks, minimises the risk of missing Saudi deadlines and allows sufficient time to resolve documentation or health-related issues before departure. Ultimately, this translates into a more organised, comfortable and spiritually fulfilling pilgrimage experience.

Intending pilgrims are encouraged to commence payment early through any of the approved channels. They may pay directly through their respective State Pilgrims’ Welfare Boards, Agencies or Commissions, register with licensed Private Tour Operators, or enrol in the NAHCON Hajj Savings Scheme (HSS), which enables prospective pilgrims to save gradually towards the cost of Hajj through partner non-interest banks. The Hajj Savings Scheme offers a convenient and disciplined pathway for Muslims to prepare financially for the pilgrimage without the burden of raising the full fare at once.

Indeed, when it comes to Hajj, early preparation begins with early payment.
