A Personal Reflection on Exemplary Leadership and Outstanding Service by the Ondo State Muslim Pilgrims Welfare Board
By Ahmed Salami
My experience during the 2026 Hajj exercise through the Ondo State Muslim Pilgrims Welfare Board is one I will always remember with deep gratitude and respect. Alongside my three brothers, I was among the 825 pilgrims who performed the pilgrimage through the Board. Our participation was facilitated through one of the Board’s trusted, dedicated, and caring agents, Alhaji Olunlade Agboola, whose professionalism and commitment gave us confidence from the very beginning of the process. Having personally witnessed the entire operation from registration in Nigeria to the successful completion of the Hajj rites in the Holy Land, I can confidently affirm that the level of organization, leadership commitment, and welfare services delivered by the Board this year was truly exceptional and deserving of public commendation.
Hajj is a sacred obligation that demands not only spiritual devotion but also efficient logistical coordination and compassionate administration. From my personal observation, the Ondo State Muslim Pilgrims Welfare Board delivered an impressive standard of service that ensured orderliness, comfort, safety, and spiritual focus throughout the journey.
At the center of this success were the Chairman of the Board, Alhaji Dikirulahi Adam, and the Secretary, Alhaji AbdulMutiu Omoniyi. Their leadership throughout the exercise reflected a rare combination of discipline, humility, dedication, and genuine concern for the welfare of pilgrims.
From Nigeria to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, the entire process was carefully planned and efficiently coordinated. Registration, documentation, travel arrangements, accommodation allocation, feeding schedules, transportation, and movement logistics were all handled in a manner that significantly reduced stress for pilgrims. This level of organization allowed many of us to concentrate more on worship, reflection, and spiritual fulfillment rather than administrative challenges.
What stood out most during the entire exercise was the human-centered leadership style demonstrated by both the Chairman and the Secretary. They were not distant administrators issuing directives from afar; they were actively present, accessible, and deeply involved in the welfare of pilgrims at every stage of the pilgrimage.
Throughout the Hajj period, both leaders consistently moved among pilgrims, checking on welfare conditions and ensuring that everyone was comfortable. They visited pilgrims in their accommodations and tents, listened attentively to concerns, and ensured that issues were addressed promptly and respectfully. Their presence alone reassured many pilgrims that their welfare remained a top priority.
One of the most remarkable aspects of their leadership was the care and attention given to elderly and physically challenged pilgrims. I personally witnessed the Chairman assisting pilgrims in wheelchairs and ensuring they received the support required during movement and the demanding rites of Hajj. The Secretary was equally committed, ensuring that vulnerable pilgrims were not neglected and that their needs received immediate attention whenever necessary.
These actions were not ceremonial gestures designed for public attention; they reflected genuine compassion, sincerity, and a profound sense of responsibility. In the physically demanding environment of Hajj, where endurance and patience are constantly tested, such personal involvement from leaders is both rare and inspiring.
Another admirable quality was their sacrifice and commitment to duty. On many occasions, both the Chairman and the Secretary remained actively engaged in pilgrims’ welfare matters long after others had retired for the night. They often ensured that pilgrims were safely settled and that pressing issues had been resolved before attending to their own rest. This demonstrated a leadership philosophy rooted in service rather than personal convenience.
The Board’s internal coordination also contributed significantly to the overall success of the operation. Welfare officers, medical personnel, support staff, religious guides, and other officials worked harmoniously under effective leadership supervision. This teamwork ensured smooth operations throughout the pilgrimage, from accommodation and feeding arrangements to healthcare services, spiritual guidance, and emergency response.
It is equally important to acknowledge the role of the Ondo State Government under the leadership of Governor Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa. While pilgrims personally financed their participation in the pilgrimage, the government’s support and oversight provided an enabling environment that strengthened the Board’s capacity to deliver quality services effectively.
From my personal experience, I can state without hesitation that the Ondo State Muslim Pilgrims Welfare Board demonstrated a commendable level of professionalism, transparency, sincerity, and commitment to service. The experience was not only spiritually rewarding but also administratively smooth, organized, and well managed.
As pilgrims, we will return home carrying more than the spiritual blessings associated with Hajj. We are also returning with lasting memories of compassionate leadership, dedicated service, and responsible administration. The conduct of the Chairman and Secretary, in particular, will remain memorable because they demonstrated that true leadership is best expressed through humility, presence, sacrifice, and service to others.
The contribution of trusted agents such as Alhaji Olunlade Agboola also deserves recognition. Their commitment to guiding intending pilgrims through the registration and preparation process helped build confidence and ensured a seamless experience long before departure to the Holy Land.
In conclusion, Hajj 2026 through the Ondo State Muslim Pilgrims Welfare Board stands as a shining example of effective pilgrimage administration. The exercise has strengthened the confidence of pilgrims in the system and demonstrated what can be achieved through dedicated leadership, teamwork, and a sincere commitment to service. It is my sincere hope that this high standard will not only be maintained but further improved upon in future operations.
May Allah accept the Hajj of all pilgrims, reward the efforts of the leadership and staff of the Board, bless the agents and stakeholders who contributed to the success of the exercise, and continue to guide them in service to humanity.
