2024 Hajj: 2 Indian pilgrims dies in elevator crash in Makkah

Two pilgrims, both from the Indian state of Bihar, died Thursday June 06, 2024 after an elevator in the residential building in Azizyah in the neighborhood of Makkah crashed because of some technical glitches.

The incident occurred Thursday in Building No 145 of Azizyah – some 10 kms from Makkah. Azizyah has hundreds of buildings where Hajj pilgrims are accommodated.

The pilgrims, who lost their lives have been identified as Md. Siddiq (74) and Md. Abdul Lateef (64).

Md Siddiq is a resident of Kathihar district whereas Md. Abdul Lateef haild from Kishanganj district of Bihar.

One pilgrim fell down the elevator shaft in the cellar and succumbed to his injuries while the other was crushed to death after he was struck between the doors of the elevator, said sources.

Normally the elevator door opens only when the elevator is standing. However, a technical fault in the lift caused the door to open and led to the tragic accident.

The Indian Haj Pilgrims Office in a social media post said that the officials of the Indian Haj Mission are coordinating with the concerned Saudi authorities, who are investigating this matter.

“All necessary assistance is being provided to the Indian Haj Pilgrims”, the office said.

120,891 Indian Pilgrims reach Saudi Arabia

Meanwhile, a total of 120,891 Indian Haj pilgrims have reached Saudi Arabia by 407 flights till Thursday June 06, 2024. Of them, 119,827 pilgrims are in Makkah and 1,064 are in Madinah al Munawwerah.

A total of 16 flights carried as many as 4,610 Hajj pilgrims Thursday alone.

India’s Hajj quota is 175,025. Of them, 140,020 will travel to Makkah through Haj Committee of India and 35,005 pilgrims will set for their Hajj Journey through Private Tour Operators.

The key ritual of Hajj this year is on Saturday June 15, 2024 when the pilgrims will stand on the Plains of Mount Arafat, the Saudi Royal Court confirmed.

The Hajj pilgrimage however will begin on June 14, 2024 when the pilgrims will leave Makkah to stay in Mina. The rituals will continue till June 19, 2024.
