As heavy rains lashed Mecca on Monday, the Grand Mosque issued safety guidelines to protect pilgrims navigating the holy site amidst the challenging weather.

The General Authority for the Affairs of the Two Holy Mosques shared instructions via social media, urging visitors to take shelter in safe areas, use handheld umbrellas, and stay informed through weather alerts.

Pilgrims were advised to follow official directions, refrain from using mobile phones during lightning, and report hazards or emergencies by calling 1966.

Moderate rainfall, accompanied by strong surface winds, swept across Mecca as part of a broader weather system impacting several regions in Saudi Arabia. The National Centre of Meteorology warned of medium to heavy thunderstorms, hail, and flash floods in areas such as Jazan, Asir, Al Baha, Riyadh, and the Eastern Province.

In response, the Mecca Municipality activated an emergency plan to address waterlogging and ensure the safety of residents and pilgrims.

More than 600 field workers, 52 specialized vehicles, and 32 large tankers were deployed to pump water and clear roads.

Teams worked around the clock in coordination with local authorities to minimize disruptions. “This reflects our commitment to safeguarding the holy city and its visitors,” the municipality stated, emphasizing their readiness to respond swiftly and effectively to the weather.

The National Centre of Meteorology issued alerts through its early warning system, predicting heavy rain and strong winds across the Kingdom. Residents and visitors were advised to remain cautious, avoid flood-prone areas, and follow official updates. The adverse weather is expected to persist into the evening, with gradual improvements later in the week.
