JUST IN: Muslims in Australia To Celebrate Eid Al Fitr 2025 on March 31

by admin

The Muslim community in Australia will officially celebrate Eid Al Fitr on March 31.

The Australian Fatwa Council and three other religious organizations have confirmed that the Shawwal crescent was not sighted on Saturday. As a result, Ramadan will last 30 days, with Sunday, March 30, marking the final day of fasting.

“According to astronomical and scholarly reports, the new moon will occur this Saturday after sunset by approximately 3 hours in Sydney. Accordingly, we hereby announce that this Sunday will mark the completion (30th day) of Ramadan, and that: Monday 31st March 2025 is the date of Eid El-Fitr and 1st Shawwal 1446 AH”

As a nation known for its multicultural diversity, Australia embraces religious and cultural festivities. On this occasion, the Muslim community engages in charitable acts, offering food, essential goods, and financial aid to those in need.

Eid celebrations in Australia begin early in the morning, as worshippers head to mosques to perform the special Eid prayer. Major cities like Sydney, Melbourne, and Brisbane host large outdoor prayer gatherings in parks and community centers to accommodate the growing Muslim population.

Imams deliver sermons covering themes of gratitude, compassion, and unity.

Following prayers, families and friends gather for festive meals. Many Muslims also visit relatives and friends, exchanging gifts and sweets as a symbol of sharing and joy.

Older family members give children money, a tradition known as “Eidiya,” as a gesture of love and blessings.

Eid Al Fitr is not a public holiday in Australia, meaning offices, schools, and businesses will remain open. However, many Muslim employees take the day off to participate in prayers and celebrations.

Some workplaces and schools also acknowledge the occasion by allowing flexibility for Muslim staff and students.

The date for Eid Al Fitr and other Islamic festivities changes from year to year, as the Islamic lunar calendar does not line up with the Gregorian calendar, meaning a moon sighting is needed every month to determine the exact dates.
