Between June 1996 and 1998, Canadian Soheil Mosun undertook the project management, manufacturing design, fabrication and crating of the iconic fences and gates surrounding the Prophet’s Mosque in Madinah, Saudi Arabia.
The piazza fence project was the largest commissioned work Soheil Mosun received, worth $14 million. Saudi Arabia spent years looking for the right contractor, and once the project was awarded to Soheil Mosun, years were spent in negotiations to get it just right.
These Custom fences and gates are made of solid steel bars and cast iron. The outer frames are fabricated from steel bars with the star modules and finials cast in grey iron. The star modules have mirror-polished bronze stars inlaid and the finials are painted in a high gloss gold finish. There are approximately (800) fence sections and (80) operable gates. The gates weigh approximately 30,000 lbs (15 tons) each and are precision-engineered to be manually operated by only one person. The overall project utilized over 8,000,000 lbs of steel.
