The National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON) has dismissed reports that the newly commissioned Gateway International Airport, Iperu, Ogun State, was rejected by Saudi carrier Flynas for Hajj operations.

NAHCON Chairman, Ambassador Ismail Abba Yusuf, described the claims as false and misleading, clarifying that the temporary relocation of Ogun pilgrims to the Murtala Muhammed International Airport was due to operational timing and flight scheduling, not any deficiency at the Gateway facility.

Yusuf said the decision followed a review of flight logistics, turnaround timelines and coordination requirements for the ongoing 2026 Hajj airlift. He stressed that Flynas never declared the airport unsuitable for operations.

He explained that Hajj airlift involves strict scheduling tied to Saudi aviation windows, aircraft rotation and movement of pilgrims across states, noting that such adjustments are common in large-scale pilgrimages.

The NAHCON chairman urged the public and intending pilgrims to disregard reports suggesting otherwise, maintaining that Gateway International Airport remains a functional and approved international facility.

He reassured affected pilgrims of safe and timely transportation to Saudi Arabia and commended the Ogun State government for its support.

Yusuf also appealed for calm, stating that the safety and welfare of Nigerian pilgrims remain the commission’s top priority.

The statement was issued by the Information and Publications Division of NAHCON.
